Peace and quiet instead of stress
Stress is basically something positive, because it is the body's way of mobilizing energy and strength before a test where we need to perform a little extra. But... if we are not allowed to rest between laps, but are more or less permanently in a stressful situation, both "body and bud" become exhausted.
Different things trigger
The experience of stress is very individual. For some it may be a project at work that only has to be finished by a certain date, for others it may be a possible conflict situation with their partner or boss. It can even be such everyday and recurring events as picking up and dropping off at kindergarten. But expectations from those around us can also stress us.
Stiftelsen Hjärnfonden has described stress in a very good and descriptive way:
"The reaction to stress is about mobilizing energy in situations where the body requires more fuel. The stress response has allowed us to survive for thousands of years. In the past, it helped us above all in situations that required physical activity in response to a threatening situation.”
Way back in time, it could be about mobilizing enough strength to be able to escape from danger or fight for our life. Today, there are other factors that mobilize the reaction - but fundamentally it is exactly the same instinct.
This happens in the body
A stress reaction starts in what is called the sympathetic nervous system and the reaction is very fast. Stress hormones begin to be secreted (cortisol, norepinephrine, and adrenaline) to raise blood pressure and pump out sugar and energy to prepare the muscles for escape. All focus is on the fight for survival, everything else has to take a back seat.
If the condition becomes more or less permanent, however, it also begins to affect the brain. Today, it has been possible to measure that our cognitive ability (learning) decreases, the ability to concentrate deteriorates, we become "forgetful". In the worst case, we suffer from exhaustion syndrome.
Adaptogens can balance
The term "adaptogen" was coined in 1947 by the pharmacologist AV Lazarev to describe the surprising effects of a vasodilating substance found in France - the increased resistance of the organism to "stress", i.e. stresses that threaten the organism's equilibrium. Since then, during the 1960s, the Soviet Union in particular has been a leader in adaptogen research and sought natural sources of adaptogens.
Natural sources exist
Today, they have succeeded in showing the effect of adaptogens at the molecular level. Pharmacological studies have shown, among other things, that the stress-protective effect of adaptogens is linked to substances that activate the cell's own protective mechanisms. It is also clear that there are natural sources with an adpathogenic effect, eg ginseng, rose root, Russian root and ashwagandha.
